7 Inspirational Quotes for Managing Stress: Or, Woodys World

At the end of a long day, the anxiety of work still hanging over your head like a black thundercloud, its difficult to find ways to relax. Since I am a recovering alcoholic, a stiff drink is no longer an option for me. One trick I learned over the years is to visualize hanging your troubles from a hard days work on the trouble tree before you enter your home. Luckily, I have a big huge oak in my front yard, and that tree has seen more troubles than Jerry Springer (okay, maybe Im exaggerating here, but you catch my drift). Here is my theory about the trouble-tree thing: just by taking the simple action of hesitating and acknowledging that all is basically well in my life today puts me in a better frame of mind before I face my spouse and kids. If I charge into the house without that slight delay, I am much more at risk to carry my days troubles in with me, unintentionally spreading the misery which can make for a pretty crappy evening, really.

If you dont have a large strong oak, a bush or a shrub will do. If you live in the desert, use a trouble rock as an alternative. The important thing is its easier psychologically to unburden your stressors on a physical object because the mind can better understand the practice through this imagery. So it really doesnt matter what object you use (tree, bush, shrub, rock) but Ive found its more effective if its right there in your front yard, and you complete the action of hanging your troubles before you enter the home. But what’s really a fascinating question is how do people get through life when faced with unbelievable stress? Some of the more new age methods like Zen or yoga are generally effective and actually work wonders. But what about the active intellectual person who, although they arent really the new age type, seem to always skate through lifes troubles with a positive outlook? I started to marvel about this ‘mind-over-matter’ thing and the tools that others use successfully to get through their bleakest days. Humor came to mind as one of the finest prescriptions to manage stress no matter who you are, and it doesnt take much self-control or practice for most of us to laugh. Despite what ordeals we have been going through in our lives, it’s always better to find the hilarity in our situation and tackle our troubles with a clear mind than it is to get irate over events which we cannot manage, where this anger blocks our vision and swells our stress levels, leaving us ineffective. One of the most trendy celebrities of all time may have to be Woody Allen. His in-your-face candor and matter-of-fact humor at the weirdness of life is articulated in the funniest ways. He can talk about any subject and he mocks our perceived notions in ways that leave you laughing and holding your side rather than being angry about it. Here are 7 inspiring Woody Allen quotes to manage stress: 1. “Money is better than poverty, if only for financial reasons.” Lets chant this mantra during our next money-manifestation session. 2. “I believe there is something out there watching us. Unfortunately, it’s the government.” Cmon, you know you smiled 3. “There are worse things in life than death. Have you ever spent an evening with an insurance salesman?” This is a classic you-know-it-can-get-worse line; just substitute the term insurance salesman with taxman for additional humor. 4. “I am not afraid of death; I just don’t want to be there when it happens.” Ditto for me! 5. “I am thankful for laughter, except when milk comes out of my nose.” I have a snorting issue when I laugh is that T.M.I.? 6. “If you want to make God laugh, tell him about your plans.” One of my favorites letting go of my infinite streams of agendas really does manage stress in my life and when things dont go my way, which happens a lot, this quote always keeps me smiling. And in spite of how things may turn out for us in the next ten, twenty, or even thirty years, I guess we all need to see life in new and diverse ways, change our perception and choose joy over darkness and doom. None of this would be possible, however, without the wisdom of those whove come before to lead us toward the right path. Whether we’re spiritual giants or not, it takes more bravery to recognize your fears and learn how to be the pilot through your life with those fears than it does to just be negative. Sometimes positive thinking is all thats required for us to be patient with each other and succeed in life. In summary, here is one last tidbit of wisdom to navigate byhowever and wherever we may be today… 7. “The talent for being happy is appreciating and liking what you have, instead of what you don’t have.” So what is the key to happiness in stress-filled moments? Want what you have! Peace Out!
